Abzeichen, Waffen-SS and Heer

"War badges" / "Kriegsabzeichen".
A unique German phenomenon that blossomed during Word War II, War Badges (“Kriegsabzeichen”), allowed an observer to determine the level of experience of a particular soldier at first glance. Though they were in existence before 1918, the number of German War Badges dramatically increased during the war and by 1945 there were over 40 different patterns. These were often subdivided into classes, distinguished by the metal type (Gold, Silver, and Bronze).

Kriegsabzeichen in superb quality! All with very nice wide needle.These are items often sold as "genuine", but these are produced after 1945, and more like very good museums-productions.

On 25 November 1942 at the height of the Battle of Stalingrad, Hitler created a new incentive for his footsoldiers in the form of the "Nahkampfsprange".
This award was instituted on November 25th, 1942. There were three grades issued:
1.Bronze - 15 days of unsupported close combat or 10 days in case of wound
2.Silver - 30 days of unsupported close combat or 20 days in case of wound
3.Gold - 50 days of unsupported close combat or 40 days in case of wound

Panzerkampfabzeichen was instituted by von Brauchitsch on 20 December 1939. It was intially in silver only, for award to tank commanders, drivers, gunners and radio operators who took parts in three armoured assaults on three separate days.

The Heer Flak Badge was awarded via a point system, with 16 being the requisite. Four points were awarded to the battery credited with downing an enemy aircraft without support. If other batteries assisted only two points were awarded. Searchlight or sound locator crews, working in conjunction with flak batteries, which were credited with a first detection, were awarded one point. T he award could also be given, regardless of points, for bravery or merit in conducting an anti-aircraft mission.
